Simon Wardley's map repository
Tool Live reference (dataset)
#9 of the ten to read first. 147 real maps across 22 industries. Twenty of these teach more than two more chapters. ⚠️ Licence contradictory — link, do not mirror.
What it is
The largest corpus of real Wardley maps by the technique's author, stored as OWM text and viewable at onlinewardleymaps.com. Roughly 147 maps (per Craddock's mirror, which reports 4,905 components and 5,172 links). It is the closest thing to a ground-truth training and reference set for what a competent map actually looks like across many industries.
Limitations
No index or README-level navigation of what each map covers; you open files to find out. Maps are workshop artefacts of variable quality, not polished exemplars. Licence ambiguity is a real blocker for redistribution.
The details
| Maintainer | Simon Wardley, with contributions from research-project attendees |
|---|---|
| Started | Maps from the "2022 AND BEYOND" research projects onward |
| Status, August 2026 | Live. 228 stars, 752 commits, 22 sector folders (finance, healthcare, defence, retail, manufacturing, construction, education, agriculture, energy, transportation, telecoms, government). |
| Licence | ⚠️ Ambiguous — flag this. The README states "Contributions to be accepted under same license of creative commons share alike" (CC BY-SA 4.0), but GitHub's detected repository licence field reads GPL-3.0. These are incompatible characterisations. Craddock's Mermaid mirror resolves it by declaring map content CC BY-SA 4.0 and preserving upstream code as GPL-3.0, which is the sensible reading — but get confirmation before mirroring anything. |

Verified 2026-08-23 — status, licence and links checked against the source on that date. The site re-checks every URL it publishes on a schedule and publishes the run, successes and failures alike.
Attribution. "Maps by Simon Wardley and research project contributors, CC BY-SA 4.0" — but resolve the GPL-3.0/CC BY-SA conflict before republishing. Safest position: link, don't mirror.
