What it is

The most useful critique, precisely because it is not adversarial. Buerkli sets out four structural limitations and is explicit that these are inherent constraints reflecting the method's assumptions, not defects. One: maps show how components evolve from genesis to commodity but cannot tell you which new components will emerge in genesis — the map is blind to the thing that will disrupt it. Two: components only move along the evolution axis under competitive pressure; absent competition, they simply sit still, so the predictive machinery stops working in monopolies, regulated markets and internal-only landscapes. Three: a map can only represent what its creators already understand — "you can't map what you don't see." Four: usefulness depends entirely on choosing the right scope and resolution, and there are no codified rules for doing so — it takes experience the method does not teach. His closing move is the right one: the question is not whether Wardley mapping is flawed but whether it is more useful than the alternatives for a given problem.
